White? Male? Aged 38? You’re a designer then.

In autumn 2009 the Design Council conducted its second comprehensive survey of the UK design industry and has now published its findings.

Key findings include:

  • There are an estimated 232,00 designers in the UK: 65,900 are freelancers, 82,500 work in consultancies and 83,600 work in-house.
  • The combined fee income of consultancies and freelancers plus the budget of in-house teams comes to an estimated £15bn, up 15% on 2005 in real terms.
  • Communications design remains the dominant discipline in the UK, followed by digital & multimedia.
  • Since 2005 the number of in-house teams has increased by 10%.
  • A third recruited at least one designer last year and just over half experienced either no change or increases in income. Take that recession!

It also comes as no surprise that most agencies are based in London (23%), with a healthy 7% based in Yorkshire & Humberside. Demographically speaking, we designers are 60% male, 93% white and, on average, 38 years old.
